Gearbox mount spacers

I have a couple of spacers roughly 1/4" thick sitting between the gearbox mount and the bracket that bolts to the chassis on my S4. The effect is to raise the gearbox slightly and I must have used them for some reason last time I fitted the bracket (a long time ago). My question is are they supposed to be there or should the bracket bolt directly to the mount?

The spacers are supposed to be there.

From memory I seem to remember they are about 3/4" thick but maybe my memory is playing tricks

That's the diagram I could have done with. The one in the workshop manual shows the bracket from underneath - which is the one angle where you can't see whether the spacers are there or not.

Many thanks.

p.s. - just measured the spacers - they're 1/2"

The spacers go between the top of the gearbox bracket and the rubber mount as shown in the parts book reference, not between the frame and the bottom flange of the gearbox bracket, as I have inferred from your description. I just measured them for a friend a month ago and from memory they were 3/8 in to 10 mm tall and perhaps 1-1/2 diam.

Must have been my oily fingered english as I'd just crawled out from under the car when I posted the query. I was trying to find out whether they went between the flexible mount and the bracket or whether they shouldn't be there at all.

If they went between the bracket and the chassis you'd need four and I suspect the bracket might well foul the intermediate pipe - or run very close anyway.

Interesting that you measured them at 9-10mm. Mine are definitely 1/2" (13mm). If type26/36's are 3/4" (19mm) maybe there's some typically Lotus variability at large.

Hi Stuart,

I am restoring my pre-airflow coupe in Florida and a friend who bought his coupe in pieces was asking about the bracket and spacers. I had my coupe's mount handy and we measured it. I've owned this coupe since 1978 and I compared its components to my late S3 dhc. I suppose I could understand a variable spacer thickness to adjust for frame and casting tolerance build-ups.

I've re-read your initial message and now realize you knew the correct location of spacers.
