Driveline Creek

Hello
Not on my Elan but on my Ginetta G4, it has Pre crossflow 1500cc engine + Elan Gearbox + Live axle (Austin A40)

Basically on inital takeup I get what can only be described as a creeky bed/ floorboard sound for 1 to 2 seconds. No other creeks or vibrations after this?
Initially I thought it could be the gearbox fouling the chassis, so I shimmed this below the mounting and its no better.
It has a late crossflow type clutch with the extender on the release bearing supplied from 105E speed.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks
Terry

Driveline Creek? - that?s in Arizona isn?t it? :D

I think I?ve experienced a similar sound on another car and it was the brakes binding before letting go. Does it feel as if the car is being held back a little.. if not then forget my suggestion your creak lies elsewhere (maybe Texas).

Thanks for the reply, it is that sort of noise, but no it doesn't feel its being held back.
Its driving me round the bend!
I know we are up sh*t creek but this is ridiculous. :-)

What type of springs are you using?
My rear springs used to make a noise when setting off which was the coil over spring rattling against the damper tube. I fitted cable ties at points around the spring to prevent contact.

Could it be a dry uj joint that binds when movement is slow but then frees up once it has momentum?

The thing is the prop is new, but the gearbox does point upwards towards the back slightly, so it maybe binding.
Any ideas how I can stop this?
Cheers

Change ujs on prop an you can at least tick that off the list. Sometmes you cannot detect any play but when you dismantle you see they a shot

Are you sure the needle bearings in the ujs were fitted correctly. Sometimes during assembly they move and get damaged. Do you know how they were assembled. If assembled using a drift and Hammer the shock can make them move. It's best to assemble using a clamping action and no shocks
Sorry if i am telling you how to suck eggs

Other things that can creek are metallastic bushes especially if they are failing. I remember my uncles TR4 suffered from this especially in dry weather. A quick squirt of WD40 worked wonders
