Lightweight gearbox

PostPost by: seniorchristo » Sun Aug 20, 2017 1:26 pm

I recently purchased a close ratio gearbox for a future project and nearly suffered a catastrophic back injury when I lifted it into my car.
Despite the cost I am considering replacing the case components with lightweight items. There seems to be a substantial difference in price between some of the suppliers. Does anyone have experience, good or bad, with TTR, SJ Sportscars, Kelvedon etc.? Also, are the bronze bushings in the main case recommended for street (150 HP) use. Regards
Chris :)

I'm afraid I can't offer impartial advice, but I could offer you a magnesium gearbox case....

Ok, thanks Graeme. I'll keep it in mind. I'm wondering, would this be compatible with an aluminum bell housing and tailshaft?
Thanks,
Chris :)

Hi,
These are the gearbox cases sold by SPC, https://www.spcomponents.co.uk/
I have built up this gearbox using their parts all fitted together with no problems.
Not sure but I think the suppliers you listed sale these parts.
Have used the close ratio gear set sold by

Ron.

I have not had experience with alloy cases but I have had the layshaft fret and wear in the original cast iron housing with straight cut Quaiffe gears and 170+ hp racing engines. I would worry about the softness of magnesium or aluminium housing wearing even in a 150hp road engine without the bronze layshaft bushings.

cheers

I'm not an expert but TTR recommend as the lightest set up Mag bell, mag case, alloy tail as apparently the rear seal in a mag tail is unreliable.
It all depends on what you are looking to achieve. My geabox case for sale is the Kelvedon one.
