Differential seals

I want to replace the seals in the diff for my S2 before I reinstall it in the chassis. I understand that the nut that secures the drive flange can change the lash in the ring and pinion. How can I remove the nut and be assured that I haven't changed the lash? What are the steps to replace the output flange seals?

When i replaced the pinion seal, i "marked" both the nut and flange positions. Upon reassembly, I tightened up to match the marks, so it was as before. Is this correct?

I did the same thing, and that was 30 years ago.
Nothing terrible has happened in the meantime......
