Lotus Elan

5 speed input bearing / bushing

PostPost by: gjz30075 » Fri Jul 15, 2016 11:02 am

I'd like some thoughts on the part that goes into the flywheel to accomodate the shorter input shaft of a
Lotus 5 speed. Is there any downside to using the 4 bolt crank bushing, turned down to fit a 6 bolt crank
flywheel? It's a really tight fit, needing a press to do the job.

Or should the Lotus part made specifically for this purpose be used? Sounds like the right answer but
any reason why the bushing can't be used?

I've used an equivalent to the bronze piece machined (in aluminum alloy) to hold the needle bearing fitting the small diameter spigot. Actually, I fitted 2 needle bearings , which I hope would ensure good support. so far, so good...

Greg I used an oilite bush from the early car turned down to fit the flywheel this was the suggestion of Ken Myers as the roller bearing is not a good fit from memory there is a rubber " o " ring seal in the roller bearing and it sits in this rather than the rollers

Looks like I'm good, then. The i.d of the bronze bushing is the same as the input shaft of the Lotus 5 speed.

Thanks all.
