Gearbox Refresh

With the box out I think it's a good idea to freshen the gearbox (stock s3). Is this something any normal shop can undertake or should a specialty shop be found (US location.)

Thanks,

fattogatto--I am at exactly the same stage with my gearbox but I am doing it myself. These are pretty simple gearboxes and all the parts are available from Dave Bean. I was quoted approx. $268 for parts yesterday-bearings, seals and gaskets plus two synchro rings-I am only replacing #1 and #2 since 3 and 4 look very good. I have done a few gearboxes before-most recently a ZF S5-18/3 and although the internals are very similar in design to the Ford/Lotus box getting to them was far more complex. The Ford box looks like being easy by comparison.

Check the 3-4 shift fork. Wear on the shifting surface is probably the biggest reason most Ford 3-rail boxes need rebuilt. Poping out of 4th

I'd rebuild it for you, Charlie, but I'm staying warm in Florida and all my tools are in Ohio.

Mines on the kitchen table at the moment, my 13 year old is rebuilding it (with some supervision). Any reasonable shop should be more than capable. The only tool required out of the ordinary is a dummy shaft for installing the laygear assembly. I shortened the old one for this purpose as I was replacing it anyway.
