Hi
I am looking for a gear lever for my plus 2. I want to put a 4 speedgearbox (actually 5). Can I use the gearlever from a baby Elan? I know there are different but is possible to use the baby Elan gearlever?
Regards

My question is if the 4 speed gear lever is the same in the plus 2 and in the baby elan?

I have owned both an Elan and a +2 and the gear levers are not the same but they are probably interchangeable. The differences are obvious if you have access to the Service Parts Lists for both the Elan and +2. If you don't have access to these lists they can be viewed online at http://www.rdent.com. On the Elan the "anti-sizzle" metalastic bush fits directly onto the actuator stud coming up out of the gearbox. On the +2 this bushing is integral to the gear lever itself. The +2 gear lever might also be set rearwards a bit more than in the Elan but this difference is minor. If you have access to an Elan gear lever make sure it has all of the special washers for attachment to the actuator stud.
The actuating lever that fits into the hemispherical recess in the gear lever cover of the gearbox are also different. At least they have different Lotus parts numbers, 036 prefix for the Elan and 050 prefix for the +2. It is not obvious what the differences are. I know that the +2 version has a cross-drilling for a split pin used to prevent the gear lever from rotating around the attachment stud. I am not sure if the version for the Elan has this cross-drilling.

There's one on FleaBay (US) right now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lotus-Elan-Plus ... UG&vxp=mtr
I have no connection to this. I just spotted it a couple of days ago. You don't see them listed often.
Cheers

Owning both 4 speed +2 and 4 speed 2 seater i wouldn't put a 2 seater gear shifter on my +2. The reason i say that is the +2 has a much better feel and doesn't tend to snap off in the same way the 2 seater's shifter does.
When i tried fitting my +2 shifter to my 2 seater the gaiter wouldn't fit or i would have converted it but looking at the design a 2 seater shifter would work on a +2 but frankly you'd have to be a little mad to use one over the proper +2 one.
