Car is now back from the hospital, new clutch, ring gear, gearbox seal, spigot bearing.

Turns out the problem was with the pressure plate, the pad for the release bearing was sitting askew resulting in the clutch being partially disengaged for most of it's travel. The friction plate was almost worn out anyway so I was on borrowed time as it was. The pressure plate was also covered in dings and scratches which must have been from when the starter bendix broke a tooth and presumably the same caused the ring gear wear.

The spigot bearing was replaced as a matter of course but they couldn't tell if it was contributing to the problem because apparently they can be damaged when separating the engine from the gearbox.

All seems fine now, hurray, although the clutch feels a bit heavier. Perhaps this could be because it is new?
