I have my '69 +2 project rolling, and I carefully set up the clutch slave with the clearances in the shop manual. It releases & engages nicely toward the top to the pedal, but if I push the pedal all the way to the floor - it re-engages, I will grind gears if I try to shift. All I can think of is that the clutch fingers get pushed so far forward that they press against the flywheel. Or something.

I did make my own pedal box support (the inside frame) with only the pictures from the parts manuals as a guide. I was wondering if there is supposed to be some limit on how far the clutch pedal can travel down. I am thinking of fabricating something, perhaps welding something onto that pedal box frame, to limit the pedal travel.

Thoughts? Advice? Prayers?

The later +2 has a limiting bolt in the pedal box. So you can run that out to limit travel if you have one.

I am not sure when it was added and which pedal box you have but you can see a nut on the out side of the pedal box same side as the brake light switch just above the lip. Then you probably have it.

Yes, it happens. Paul Matty put a new clutch in our S3 and struggled to find one compatible with our Voight gearbox (which surprised me). The result was exactly as you describe and they welded a bracket to the pedal box to prevent the pedal travelling to the floor.
Just try different thicknesses of, say, blocks of wood resting against the inside of the bulkhead under the clutch pedal to calculate how much travel you (don`t) need.
