is my knob too short?

my knob seems shorter than everyone elses'.
I asked my girlfriend but she said it was the perfect size.

ok in all seriousness,
The car came with a +2 knob but a four speed box, and the gear lever looks shorter than any picture i've seen.

When I unscrewed the knob it came out with some threading.

not sure what's going on here, any ideas sirs?

It's a 1967 S3,
cheers!

It looks like the lever had been shortened and modified to use a stud to join the knob and lever rather than the knob screw onto the threaded end of the lever. Have you looked under the rubber bellows to see if you still have the anti sizzle rubber mount at the gearbox end?

The early Elans had a sizzling vibration from the gear lever. Lotus fixed it by fitting a rubber bushing at the bottom of the gear lever just above the ball joint in the gear box, I am pretty sure this change occurred early on, so your S3 should have it. It looks like yours has been modified at some stage to fit a customised shorter lever without the rubber bushing

If my knob had a sizzle, I don't think I would use a rubber thingy to subdue it..............
