Differential filler plug replacement.

Hello all,

Before I post in the wanted section, is there any where I can purchase a differential filler plug? The hex head on mine is pretty much circular in shape as I discovered this afternoon! I suppose I could cut a slot in it and fit a flat head screw driver in it but I'd like to explore the replacement avenue first.

If you mean the level plug on the back of the diff case SJ Sportscars list it.

I don't think you can cut a slot in it anyway; the level plug on the back is hollow, I think, for lightness and I presume the one on the top of the diff is hollow also.


Best way of getting at it is to take out the spare wheel and use a 2 to 3 inch circular hole-saw to make a large neat hole in the front side of the boot. But before you do so get a suitable blind grommet to fill the hole or make a disk of aluminium which you can screw with self-tappers onto the front wall.

I seem to remember the original is a Whitworth size?

Thanks Roger and Bill. Looks like it alright.

Yes, I had noticed it was hollow but wasn't sure how far it went. Thankfully a previous owner had cut a neat hole in the boot and used a rubber plug to tidy it up as well as seal the hole.

Take a look in a plumbers, it may be a standard plumbing stopper.

Is there really a need to do this? I checked my diff level last weekend.. Just jacked up the rear left. Did'nt even take the wheel off.. An hour max...

I suspect checking is relatively straightforward, but.topping up without getting it everywhere might not be?

A small hole - just large enough to pass a piece of 1/2" hose (cut from my garden hose :D ) - makes topping up easy and a std blanking grommet will block it. The hardest part is deciding on the exact spot to drill the hole so it lines up with the filler plug.

I used a 12" piece of tubing attached to the oil bottle... Not too bad.

Billwill was taking about a 2-3" hole...

Just back from the plumber's merchant's. Indeed, AHM, it is a 1/2 BSP plug with an 18 mm hex head. The drain was an 8mm plug apparently. Two of each and fibre washers, ?6.
