Crown Wheel Damage

Hello all, I'm after a bit of advice please.

I acquired this 3.9:1 diff with a view to having it fully rebuilt using a Quaife ATB and fitted to my '68 S4.

Upon inspection I've found a few teeth have chipped and there are general signs that the differential has had a slightly harder life than I was led to believe.

Attached are a few photos of the damage and general surface rust. Is this still usable or is it only fit for the bin?
I have no frame of reference when it comes to these items so any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

A little hard to tell from the photos but it looks heavily worn to me. I would certainly be having second thoughts about rebuilding a new diff with it.

In the end with this sort of thing you either rebuild it as best you can and if its noisy you live with it or start again. The alternative is find a better crown wheel and pinion set.

cheers
Rohan

Thanks Rohan,

I guess you've confirmed what I was already thinking.

This unit will be returned and I'll resume the search for an alternative.

Walk away from the CWP set. A lot of used CWPs will look far better than that one.You don't want to waste time and treasure on a duff gear set.
