trans oil

I took the +2 to a car show today. Transmission began a whine noise on deceleration. I was thinking of removing the current oil to inspect its condition. What is recommended for the transmission? Its a Cortina 4 speed unit.

I also had front end vibration at around 60MPH and the car pulled left upon braking. Appears I will have a lot of servicing this winter.

I use Redline MTL -see the link below - not the cheapest but probably the best and makes the change in the 4 speed box even better especially when its working hard and hot.

You want to be careful of using a GL-5 hypoid oil in the gear box as they may contain high levels of suphur that can corrode the brass syncro rings. They are designed for hypoid diffs and the high levels of sliding contact of this style of gear and while they will work in a Gear Box generally they are not specifically designed for use in one like the MTL is. There is a lot of technical details on the Redline site.

Hey Bob,

I use Swepco gear oil, old habit as this is "the" oil for us Porsche guys. Are you sure it is the trans? no rear end or ujoint?

As for brakes, I am going to plug this product. I have no affiliation with them. Reverse bleeding of the brake system. Push in the fluid from each corner of the system. Instead of trying to push the air down and out, this pushes up.....as the air goes up into the master and out, lid off of course. One man operation and works every time. Not cheap but money well spent first time used.

Next week I will get the car on jack stands and inspect everything.

It sounds like the transmission. It was rebuilt by a transmission shop when the car was restored but as I am learning, this does not always translate to a job well done.

I cut my finger rather badly on Saturday so I have not yet ventured into the garage to get started. I will report my findings.
