S3 gearbox type

Hi everyone, My engine and box are coming out on Monday to investigate the problem of jumping out of first gear. I was hoping to get it repaired and back in by Thursday but all the gearbox repair people I know are either on Holiday, working away or unable to look at it till next month.

Question : as I'm only just building up my Knowledge again after a 30 year gap from owning and running an S3 elan what type of box is it? I'm thinking of short term seeing if I can pick up another box.

I'm told it is a 4 speed rocket box, fitted to 2.0 Cortina's Mk 3/4/5 and the escort rs2000 Mk 1/2 !
I'm also informed that the internals are the same as a type 9 box. Now if they are I've got a type 9 box that I didn't get round to fitting into one of the morgans I own and I could pillage that to repair the Lotus box.

I've got the help of somebody next week in pulling the box in and out so it would be helpful to be able to put it back a few days later.

Any helpful information would be appreciated,

John

John,

The box is earlier than the ones you mention and was originally fitted to the MK1 Cortina, however it was fitted with a Lotus gear cluster. When Ford introduced the Corsair 2000E the gear ratios were deemed close enough and were used by Lotus.
