Hello Everyone,

For the last few months i have been refurbishing my 1965 Elan S2 and i am now at the stage where i am ready for a test drive. However i have a problem with the clutch. The only way that i can get the clutch to operate is with the slave cylinder rod adjustment very close to the end at which point there is no free play. I have also noticed that the clutch pedal sits much lower than the brake pedal and the clutch master cylinder push rod is about 10mm shorter than the brake pedal push rod.

Would i be right to assume that i have the wrong clutch push rod? I had a quick look at SJ sports cars website and they sell a new clutch master cylinder but you have to change the push rod. Is this a common problem? if so what do i do? do i have to find an original push rod or is there some other fix?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Baz
First, have you replaced the clutch with a cover plate that has no bearing pad on the fingers.If you have you have lost approx 6-10 mm distance into the bell housing . To correct this you need an extended bearing carrier and a thrust race with a round face to contact the clutch fingers. I know i ve been there.

I replaced the clutch cover and plate that were in the car as they appeared to be fairly new and in good condition and the cover did not have a bearing surface. I replaced the bearing as it was worn with a bearing from Paul Matty but i do not remember if it was rounded or flat! i just assumed that it was correct.

I have removed the push rod today and it is only 70mm from the round end to the centre of the clevis pin hole so judging by the comments and other postings it is clearly the wrong item. My local multi marque club has a good stores so i will pay them a visit next week and see if i can get a longer push rod. I only hope the engine and box does not have to be removed again!

Baz altering the pedal hight will not correct the slave cylinder adjustment problem.i have some photos showing this slave cylinder mal adjustment if i can find them i will post them later.
