Mainshaft Grooved?

Hello to all,
Original S2 Elan with three rail 4 Speed Trans, 42K miles.
As I was inspecting transmission components prior to final assembly, I noticed a groove and some ?scars? [for lack of a better term] on the back half of the Mainshaft. This is the part of the mainshaft that runs through the Tailshaft Housing, where there appears to be nothing that could be rubbing on the shaft to cause the groove shown in the pic below, and nothing that would cause any of the other marks.
Is this groove common? It does not appear to be a new condition, there are no obvious fresh rub marks or discoloration.
Is this just part of the shaft since new?
I still have a concern about shaft strength, especially since the shaft has a relatively long and unsupported length with no intermediate bearing.
Does anyone have any experience with these shafts breaking or twisting in higher HP applications?
Would it be useful to have this section of the shaft shot peened, or even more drastically, reinforced with a sleeve?
Any observations, experiences and suggestions are welcomed.
