Do anyone know whether the Elan S3 Speedometer ever was offered with a Km/h dial instead of miles?
Photos?

Yes, I believe they were as they were sold in the European market.

I think there are photos in the Brookland road test books, but not sure how well they'll scan, the reprints aren't great quality.

The Lotus part number for S1-S3SS KPH speedometers is 036M6103 (MPH speedometer is 036M6101). The Smiths number for the MPH speedometer is 6136/00A 1000. I do not have a KPH speedometer on hand to get the Smiths number.

I do not remember an early KPH speedometer coming up on eBay.

Thanks all for answering.
I never have seen a KPH Speedo. May be that Lotus had a Number for a KPH Speedometer, but did they produce these?

I'd almost forgotten about this, but twenty-five years ago I was at a well known Lotus parts specialist in Ruislip, West London, I'm sure he had acquired the factory stocks of metric Elan and Europa instruments. I think some went to Mick Miller, it's a very long shot, but perhaps Sue has some left gathering dust.

Gordon,

What is the Smiths part number that should be in small letters somewhere on the front?

According to info I have from 1968 these numbers apply:

Elan: SN6207/08 140mph and 980 (indicating revs per mile??) on the edge
Lotus part no is indicated as 36M6122

SN6207/09 220kmh and 587.5 on the edge with lotus part no. 36M6133

Sorry David, don't have the car any more! But ElanFan1 has answered. There are presumably others who could answer as well!

Well, we have 3 of 4 Smiths part numbers now.

SN6136/00A 1000 is the MPH version for S1-S3.
SN6207/08 980 is the MPH version for S4 and later.
SN6207/09 587.5 is the KPH version for S4 and later.

We need the KPH part number for the S1-S3 which is probably close to SN6136/01A 587.5 or SN6136/00B 587.5 or something similar. Does anybody know for sure?

Note that the Europa had a speedometer with a 960 turns/mile figure.

The S1-S2-Coupe parts book lists the KPH speedo as SM6136/01. This is one line below the MPH version as SN6136/00. I would assume the SM is a misprint, as SN is the prefix for those style of speedos.
