Clutch Noise

Hi All,

A question for the transmission gurus...

I recently overhauled clutch master and slave cylinders (and at the moment I'm not convinced this is related). All is physically working well, although after about 50 miles a sound appeared. There is a now a random rubbing sound, not in synch with anything in particular...not engine or road speed dependent and ... occurs when it wants at any time. Although I can make it go away by applying a tiny bit of clutch pressure.

Clutch clearance is bang on, although of course if I take the clearance away and apply tiny pressure to the release arm through adjustment, once gain I can stop the random rubbing.

Any ideas?

Stuart

p.s. I've bled the thing to death!!!!

Hi Stuart

It sounds like you suspect the clutch? If you apply the clutch and it goes then I would say the release bearing is staying in contact with the clutch. So I would look at why; if the adjustment is spot on then it must be that the spring is not pulling the bearing back from the clutch.

1. Is the spring missing?
2. Is the spring weak?
3. Is the arm catching on something?
4. Is the pedal catching on something?
5. Is the pedal spring broken (mine was)?
6. Is the clutch hose pinched or breaking down inside?
7. Is the release bearing moving freely (is the shaft dry)?

A few things to check, hope it helps.

Jason

It sounds like the release bearing skidding on the contact face on the clutch pressure plate when it randomly touches it . Increase the clearance slightly and it should go away
