The normal needle rollers I use have a nylon ring at one end inside the outer case, this acts as a seal (of sorts). Position this seal to the clutch side and it helps prevent water, dirt and dust getting into the pilot bearing. As other have said its a blind hole so only need the seal at one end

cheers

Sorry. I would forget my head if it was not welded on.... :?

This little sketch is courtesy of Andrew. It shows the dimensions etc of the bearing holder for the 5 speed gearbox input shaft pilot (spigot) bearing. The bearing number is the INA number written on the pdf also. Hope this is helpfull to you.. I am about to start making one. The bearing is easy to obtain from bearing suppliers. I had one in my car stock. Much to my amazement.

Many thanks Andrew..

Alex

My daughter does that as well, but I gather they get over it when they're about 25.

Is the "Lotus" cover over the front of the car magnetic too? I find that they don't stay in place too well.

Re.the sketch of the carrier, shouldn't the internal diameter be 0.824?

The bearing is metric at 21.00 O/D x 15 long.

The one I have in my hand is INA (F-331262) and the O/D measures an average of 0.828".
So allowing 2 thou for interferance, and in this case, 0.826" is what I would use, John.

BTW the INA bearing has a nitrile seal at one end.

Does this mean you don't need a gasket?

What's the matter? Don't you trust me anymore?   EErrr ..I measured it. Andrew sketched it!

I am just making the internal bore a good but not too tight int' fit to the bearing. Just a light pressure to fit. Not started yet but I will get to it soon...

The release bearing is smaller I/d for the 4 than the 5. To fit the 5 onto the 4 'holder' it need a little sleeve turning up. Which I think means that the std 4 speed lever arm will fit without any mods? Is this correct?

Sue M has also told me that the speedo cables are the same. She only stocks 1 type. ''Fits all Elans''.

Gearbox build is underway. Clutch bits will be with me mid December. Gearbox will be out of the car and on the 'bench' by this weekend.
