Gearbox swop?

PostPost by: alexblack13 » Wed Nov 24, 2010 4:45 pm

Yep. Both the same.

Took off the flywheel today and removed the spigot / pilot bearing from the end of the crank. The little bearing was a new one and still is as new, so I'll keep it as a spare. Keeping all the 4 speed bits just now. Might part with them later.. Might not!

Started to the special holder. Easy peasy... Some pic's when its finished.

Alex,

I'm now going from memory (dangerous, or what?), but as I 'remember' it the special holder will but-up against the end of the crank when fully inserted in the flywheel - please correct me if I'm wrong.
If this is the case, then part of the bearing will be in the crank as well as the holder.

I look forward to the pictures.

Hi all,

Just a quick question,I have read through this topic and im still a bit confused,so can some one put up a list of parts required to carry out the swap from 4 to 5 speed box, please?

I have a lotus 5 speed box,rebuilt,with bell house.

So,apart from the prop, what else do i need?

Many thanks, and sorry for being thick.....

Hi Paul,
Me again !!
You're also going to need the gearbox mount which is different to the four speed.

Hi Paul,... All :)

I have had to buy...

New clutch cover. New clutch driven plate and new release bearing holder(Brian swapped me a new bearing for my old sump!). New spigot / pilot bearing (which is the same. I am just fitting a new one again).

I was told I needed a new speedo cable. Sue Miller says ''not required''.

I was told nothing about the spigot bearing holder for the 5 speed box & this def' IS required. It can be got round but IMHO better fitted. So I am making one now! This fits into the flywheel (as per Brian's post above) and allows for the shorter input shaft on the 5 speed.

CLUTCH operating lever.... I am trying to use the 4 speed lever with a mod'... easy to do I am told, but I don't as yet know what the 'mod' is. I will find out when I have the clutch bearing holder.

Brian has kindly made me a template of the exhaust mod' to clear the gearbox. I will check and do when I dry mount the box and the exhaust. Mod's will then follow as required.

I am also doing a change to the Clutch Hyd' line. I have a s/s line with banjo each end. The slave end is coming off and will be replaced with a std 3/8'' UNF Male end with lock nuts. This will be fixed onto an 'L' bracket. St'd fit Kunifer from there to the cyl', routed as well away from the heat as possible. Possibly with a little s/s shield.

Then there is the mount. Same mount, different plate! St'd plate can be modified to fit.

Clear as mud? Its no big deal so far!

Get on with it!!

Alex,

You use the short speedo cable at your peril. Only the longer cable will suit.

Take my advice based on bad experience. You must, repeat must, have the cable entering the gearbox drive unit from the LH side. This way you can have access to the drive unit by slightly increasing the hole in the body rearwards of the gearshift hole. You have to increase the hole rearwards anyway to match the gearbox.

I'm not sure if I took pictures of my car - if I did I will PM them to you.

Hi Brian.

Thanks again man.

They don't have a longer cable. Sue says they only have one for all cars. ?? So I would have to have one made. The one on the car now looks like its long enough. Are you talking left side = Near side. Cable would then loop down over the box and curve over to the angled drive?

I know where you are coming from though. I take it you had a cable failure and had a job getting to it?

Any idea of cable total length required?

Did not know about the body mods!!!! Will I need to enlarge even with the 4 speed shift lever/gearstick used?

Bugger! I thought that was it sussed...... :?

To deep in now to stop though.

Have a look for those pic's for us..

I finished it! Here I go again. Had a bit of 1.1/2" BMS bar.. It was .003 too small diameter.. AArrrgh!!. Next up was a pc of 1/2" bms plate, (with a couple of dinks!) so that got used.

The bearing in the job is the one I just took out of the flywheel (everyone know how to do this easily without damaging the bearing?) The holder is pushed in flush with the rear of the flywheel. The bearing is protruding approx 3 mm which will engage a little in the crank bore.

Happy days.. Paint motor next and fit the (when painted!) sump... Still waiting on my new sump gasket kit..

Some pic's of the bearing holder etc....Hope they are helpful...

Did you find those pics Brian?

Holder is flush with the flywheel. Bearing sits about 3 mm proud.
That will engage a little in the crank bore. Ideal.... ;-))

I left the litle dinks in the metal as I did not want to make the bush any thinner. its just under the 1/2"

sorry about the couple of dink marks.Proof of a previous life..They do no harm.I did not bother facing them off.No point. and the bush was just under thickness as is..

Is the pivot "pin" for the clutch arm different with the 4 speed and 5 speed? It looks maybe so. I only have a 4 speed one which is too small a diameter where it fits in the 5 speed bellhousing. I want to use the 4 speed arm, does a 5 speed pivot use a wire clip like the 4 speed? over to you JPC; AB; BC!

All this discussion makes me believe that the challenge to fit a concentric slave cylinder was worthwhile. :) 8) :)

We are all having some input (Batteries not included!!) and we WILL get there..

Have fun... What do you think of the needle roller holder thingymajig....?
