It is a beautiful, sweet shifting box with good semi close ratios - one of the quickest, nicest feeling I have ever used.

The 2 liter motor is 2 engines in one thanks to variable cams. Below 6,000 RPM it is a docile, tractable street motor but above 6,000 it becomes a 240 Hp, 9,000 rpm screamer. And that with a 100,000 mile factory warrantee.
Later models are 2.2 with more torque but slightly less HP

The 2.2 you speak of is the F22C federal (US) version and makes no more peak power (237bhp) just has a slightly broader torque spread. It does indeed spin the 'other' way to the twink.

As much as I am not a fan of fitting a contemporary engine in a classic, it does have a lovely gearbox. Quite a big one too, it's substantially longer than the Elan's one. The F20C engine itself is also heavier (137kg), longer and deeper than the Twink.

Really?
I was being ironic, or so I thought. I'm coming to the end of my tether with folks trying to make an early 60's kit car into a Nissan Skyline.

However; now elansprint, are you are telling us that VW have put a box into the new Polo that is not a FWD box, this is really interesting; I was in the dealership only this morning discussing my Wife's new Polo (which we collect in two weeks). Whilst we have gone for the five speed manual I did talk about the 7 speed DSG box and there was no mention of it being rear wheel drive.

The things you learn on this forum never cease to amaze me.

John,
My last message was not aimed at you.

I have slightly edited my post to reflect this.
