Gear box ratio

Hello,
I was told today that my S3 has a semi close ratio gear box. What is this? Is there different gear box that Lotus used for the Elan?
I would appreciate comments on this statement.

Oliver,
The euphemistically called semi-close ratio was 2.972, 2.01, 1.397, and 1.00.
The earlier close ratio was 2.51, 1.636, 1.231, and 1.00.
A downloadable spreadsheet at viewtopic.php?t=16413&view=next down at the bottom, 20080411zGearRatios.xls, allows you to mathematically view various properties of any gear box ratio set.
Now you can be thoroughly confused.
