I know that this is an old chestnut, however here goes.
I would like to upgrade my S4 to a 5 speed box. The only way I can see of doing so is to find a +2 5 speed box and change over. I am sure lots have tried this, does it work and do you need extra or different parts? ie Propshafts, Speedo cables fixing brakets etc. Or does anybody know who does a 5 speed converstion and how to contact them? Any help would be very much appreciated. On the other hand I have understand a 3.55 crown wheel is an option where can a I source one ?
Any help much apprciated

There are lots of ways to do this. There is an article on this site about the Lotus 5 speed box (I have a box and bellhousing but not the right tail housing, if you are interested) I have gone for a Ford Type 9 which has a modified tail housing (and other internal parts) to get the gear lever in the right place. Mine isn't an Alan Voigts, but he is the main supplier of this type of gear box, I think he is somewhere in Merseyside - but isn't on the web, you'd have to ring him.
Costs are not cheap, my conversion needs a different clutch plate, speedo cable, possibly a differnt prop shaft. Everything else can be reused. I got my 'box for a VERY good price and i will have spent just shy of ?1000 all in. A 5 speed Lotus 'box will be at least ?500 + rebuild and some parts are unobtainable.
Thats my story on 5 speeds, let us know what you decide to do.

Bob,
The Lotus Service Bulletin for installing the Lotus five speed gearbox in an Elan is in the lotuselan.net library here:
http://www.lotuselan.net/publish/lpb_fi ... conv.shtml
Alan Voights is located at 4 Toronto Street, Wallasey, Merseyside CH44 6PR and his telephone is 0151 630 3575. Be prepared for a long story. He had been out of production for a while with his T9 conversions but he seems to be "gearing up" again. Where are you located?
