The car is stuck in 1st gear. What are the potential problems? How screwed am I?

The chances are that its just the gearlever (shifter) has gone over top of the selector rods and is sitting outside the gate, you just have to remove the gearlever, move the selector rods back to the neutral position (with a screwdriver) and refit the gearlever,
