Apart from modifying Escort diffs, are there any other alternatives?

Why would you want to fit a different diff?

The escort parts are easily available in all sorts of ratios inc lim slip. The casings are also easily available.

Is it a horsepower thing? If so, other things will be breaking before the diff.

I'd be interested in a lower ratio diff, so I didn't run at 4000rpm at a normal (70) cruising speed. Where would one be sourced from? In US or in UK?

The Elan came with the following diff ratios

3.9
3.77
3.55

I don't know what you have fitted in yours, I would guess it is a 3.9 as my S4 has a 3.77 and does 3500rpm at 70mph (aprox).

Having checked out what Ford Escort ratios are available it looks like the 3.55 is the best you could get off the shelf. An other route is to look at 5 speed gearbox conversions to see if you can get an overdriven top gear.
