Close Ratio Propshaft Length

PostPost by: types26/36 » Sat Apr 21, 2018 8:50 am

When I first rebuilt my S2 it did not have a prop-shaft and I remember researching prop-shafts at the time .....probably 25 years ago.
From memory and some scribbled notes the early cars had a prop-shaft with a 4.5" sliding splined yoke while the later cars had a prop-shaft with a 4." sliding yoke, the actual prop-shaft length was the same but overall length was different.
I have a reference for this somewhere and will have a dig around to see if I can find it.

Found this on this site, may explain parts number but not length.

Nice one Brian, I'd be interested to know if the propshaft flanges can be swapped? Are they staked, or circlipped?

You're welcome Rob. I guess there's no need for me to measure the gear casings now then! What size flange did we fit on your diff? Larger size if I remember correctly?

Hi Al,
Yes its amazing what lingers in the corners of our minds, cant help with the staked/circlipped flanges though
I still have that 3.54 you did for me and still rotating it periodically  ...... dont know if I'll ever get round to fitting it  .......has the warranty run out yet? and btw John is nowhere near trying out the LSD

I agree with Rohan that the reason for a different part number prop shaft is the diameter of the flange mounting to the diff. There are different tail housings, different mounting arrangements and even the Mk2 Cortina GT shifter, but all except the Anglia are same length.

I located a small diameter pinion flange yesterday that I will be using when I convert a 3.9 from a Cortina to a 3.54 for the S2. It seems that it is just a matter of a parts change to go along with what Ford was using at the time. Have never had the opportunity to see what was used on the Anglia, but would guess that it used the small diameter flange.
