Close ratio value??

If that doesn't appeal why not try a fitting a 3.7 dif?
I picked up a 3.7 diff before the idea of semi close and 3.55's came along....I'm leaning towards that. Not much different than 3.9 but on today's roads a little bit helps.

I presume you fitted straight cut gears from Quaiffe? I was not aware that new helical cut close ratio gears to the original design are available?

Yes, Quaiffe straight cut gears via r.d.enterprises. The helical cut gears listed on e-Bay are something I have not seen before. Putting the new gearbox (along with a lot of P.M.) into my Elan is a Winter project. Once back on the road I'll post the results (noise, etc.).
