Propshaft UJs

Salut Rohan

Yes, there's a white line to line up - and small bits of metal tacked to the prop.

I'm grateful for all the answers but I can't decipher if the lack of grease nipples will affect balance. I would of thought not or minimally as the grease nipples are near the centre of rotation.

I've ordreded a pair of sealed units - s'posed to be 'used by a major prop manufacturer' - I'll see what turns up. Do you have a supplier for the Spicer units, Cal?

Your prop' will have been balanced (and marked up) with the grease nipples fitted I am sure. Fitting sealed items IMHO will effect the balance. I could be wrong, but they do spin at a fair RPM.

I really do hope the balance is ok when you are finished but for the cost of having it checked, I personally (and I am NOT loaded I assure you. I am a pensioner now :? ) would not risk it. Have the balance checked when you have finished it Vernon. A good investment IMHO. I refitted my 4 speed item. The only part of the car that I did not refurb' and yes it had to come out again. Not to difficult with the 4 speed but a 'mare with the 5 speed box.

Hope it all goes well though buddy.

Just to let you know that BRD, the propshaft maker, changed to sealed for life INA bearings for all Ford production in 1972/3.

Just to make it clear guys... I am not advocating the fitting of like for like grease nipple equipped Items. Vernon has a pref' (and so would I) to change to sealed for life... Great.. No issues at all either way.. BUT... Changing from nipples to none could possibly (and more likely probably) effect the balance? ... May do.. May not! .... So lets say Vernon changes to sealed.. Superb.. Me too, I would. Then everything looks hunky dorry... So you fit it all together and off you go for a test drive........ and find the shaft is out of balance!!!!! Another weeks work? The whole shooting match has to come out again remember. If it were just a case of removing the prop shaft I would risk it also.. But to have to take out the engine and gearbox to fix? Well, I personally would have the shaft balanced before I fitted it. What would be the cost of having the shaft re-balanced?

Just my humble ...... I say again, do what you feel is right for you.

I am with Alex on this, I have had two propshafts balanced after refurb and in spite of careful asembly both had to have weights added. In one case I replaced the U/J's with the same standard so a bit of a surprise there and in the second it was a reworked shaft to suit my 5 speed type 9 installation not such a surprise but never the less as this shaft can now rotates faster than the engine by around 20% I would not risk it. Cost was ?75 two years ago and this had risen to ? 85 this year, I did not shop around so could be cheaper elsewhere.

Salut les gars

Exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. I'll check out some transmission specialists.

Merci beaucoup.
