Gear change lever retaining caps

Could you tell me about each gear change lever retaining caps?
Steel/Nylon#1(white)Ford marked/Nylon#2(green) Fomoco marked
Which is the better one? Maybe the nylon one is improve version for noise? But it's different height. Why?

I don't know the reason for the difference but I do have both types of cap.

I found that if i tighten the steel cap with the single piece gearstick it's too stiff to change gear , the steel cap came with the anti sizzle gear stick.

I am using the single piece gearstick with the deeper plastic cap at the moment and a gasket to space it slightly

Also I think the steel cap came from a cortina but I'm not 100% on that steve

I posted on this issue earlier.

I found that the new billet aluminum retaining cap was too short when fully screwed in. I could not engage reverse by pulling up on the lever.

Reverted to the old nylon cap.

When I complained to the supplier about the aluminum cap they sent me another nylon cap that was wholly unsuitable. I threw it in a box somewhere. I won't bother posting a picture of it - completely wrong.

Three gearbox configurations that use 3 different gear lever types but all use the retaining cap.

as a point of interest what does the middle box come from with the shifter extension (as I have one of those extensions and am interested to find out - it came from a '79 Caterham but is clearly a Ford part).

i am dragging back memories from 42 years ago but I think its the same as, but probably not limited to, the remote control gearshift extension on a MK1 Cortina 1500GT.

Thank you for the information. It?s very complicated.
From parts list for Lotus Elan and Ford/Lotus Cortina,
The Lotus Elan S1,S2 gear change lever(single) retaining cap is same as
remote control Ford Cortina GT and Lotus Cortina. The parts number is 116E-7220(A).
For the standard Ford Cortina(direct, not remote control) is 105E-7220(B) which came from Ford Anglia.
The Lotus Elan gear change cover is same as standard Ford Cortina. The parts number is 113E-7205-C.
105E-7220(B) replaced by 68BB 7220-AA from 8/67 for standard Ford Cortina MK2 and Lotus Elan S3(anti sizzle gear lever).
So I guess
105E-7220(B) is steel cap
116E-7220(A) is Nylon#1(white)Ford marked the deeper plastic cap.
68BB 7220-AA is Nylon#2(green) Fomoco marked
First I thought it?s different between remote control and direct one.
However Lotus Elan(direct) and Lotus Cortina(remote) both use 116E-7220(A).
I?m not sure the shape of cap 68BB 7220-AA for late Elan (anti sizzle gear lever).
Does anyone know the original shape of 68BB 7220-AA? Why did change the caps?
Just in case, Is this Ford parts number?

This plastic ball, on the lever, was used later in production, it may well be paired with the introduction of the plastic cap. Probably just a cost saving but would isolate vibration and noise.
