I'm thinking of buying a second gearbox as mine has a whine and it's possibly cheaper than a rebuild.
Thanks for any advice

Yes it will fit. The later type has a two-part lever joined by a rubber bush to prevent noise being transmitted into the gear lever from the box. The solid lever gives a better feel to the change, in my opinion.

I have to agree. The difference in shifting between my S2, with a solid stick, vs my Plus2 with cushion, is significant. On my list is to construct a new solid shift lever for the Plus2. Can always change back if I do not like the change.

In my opinion the +2 gear selector is the better of the two bushed types, i'm sick of my 2 seater gear selector as i have already snapped one lower section and what i consider 'tight' still loosens if i'm slightly aggressive selecting gears plus i have a Sue Miller bush fitted and it feels too soft and vague.
So for me i'll end up with one of these https://www.tonythompsonracing.co.uk/pa ... el-billet/ only reason i've not pulled the trigger already is i was hoping for a chrome version to save messing about and i was a little worried about it rattling.

I prefer solid sticks, they do sizzle at some resonant frequency though, but nice and positive.
You can mod old Anglia or Cortina sticks for the cost of some patience, heat and use of a lathe.

Small world....... I was just watching a Harry's garage and he seem to like the solid selector too

Looks like a Tony Thompson even though he says he had it done at Paul matty.

On a twin can Escort the gear lever is solid but where it locates in the selector lever there's a nylon bush (which often breaks and disappears into the inards or the box). Never had a problem with sizzle if this bush is in place. Keeps the shift tight too. Becomes a bit sloppy if it's missing.

Yes, plus more levers to move to the tail area. Elans and Anglia and early Cortina is straight in the box with metal half ball. Also end of mech has a flat. Remote integral has that nylon bit and end of lever has a ball end.

Not seen that before. You live and learn. I thought you were talking about a remote integral. Is it still available. I always thought an Escort lever was further back with remote integral.

I had a look in my box of gearbox bits and found the little nylon device that I thought was a washer. When cleaned a little it is the nylon device shown with the red arrow. Has a little spigot to locate in the metal cup and prevent metal to metal contact
I will be fitting it to see how it behaves. Mike
