Just bought a Lotus 5 speed gearbox

PostPost by: Baggy2 » Tue Oct 09, 2012 10:51 am

Hi,
I've just bought a Lotus 5 speed box for my +2. I'm wondering what other bits I am going to need to install it.
I know I need a new propshaft but what about:-

Speedo drive?

Clutch internals - ie plate and cover?

Clutch Slave cylinder?

I'm assuming the same starter motor fits?

The Chassis has the holes for the Lotus box and it comes with a mounting plate so that should be OK.

Also are the any out of car checks I can do to make sure its OK before installing

Thanks

Baggy

Nice find Baggy.

Alex's topic is excellent. Make sure you function check the backup light switch as probably difficult to get to after install; maybe some extension wires to a block connector make sense?

Don't forget to check Technical Tips from the homepage here. Under "Gearbox" there are many Lotus Service Bulletins regarding the Lotus 5 speed box. The first covers new installations and has a complete list of needed parts. This may be covered in the thread cited by Gary but I didn't sift through all umpteen pages.

Don't forget the bearing carrier needed to move the bearing in the flywheel closer to the gearbox.

After all these years it's just clicked.....I always wondered about the mod to the clutch plate on the 5 speed boxes and thought that lotus had got it the wrong way around but they haven't....the mod is there to clear the altered bearing carrier and needle bearing....

Many thanks for all the information. One thing I hadn't expected was that the exhaust manifold may not clear the bell housing - has anyone any experience or comments regard this aspect?
Thanks again

Baggy
This happened with my conversion,a judicial application of the Gas axe and an old BSA fork leg stanchion applied into each manifold pipe in turn was enough to move them 1/4" or 1/2",that was all that was needed..
