Gearbox to spedo cable oil seal?

PostPost by: GreekS1 » Thu Dec 01, 2011 7:21 am

Hello,
I recently sent both my main instuments to Speedy Cables for calibration. The engineer working on my speedometer found it to be full of gear oil and so suggested I check the seal on the gearbox before refitting it.
I removed the T joint from the right front of the gearbox where the cables joins it. I cant however find any seal on it or on the gearbox. There was just a thin gasket which I think is to prevent oil from dripping down.

My question is: is there supposed to be a seal that pevents oil to be carried on from the cable to the speedometer? And if so, where should it be located?

Cheers

Vassilis,

I don't remember any sealing apart from the 'O' ring and gasket shown in this thread:

elan-f15/gearbox-angle-drive-oil-leak-t24083.html

However, the same problem was reported here:

elan-f15/speedo-full-oil-t13777.html

It isn't clear whether cleaning the breather resulted in a cure, but worth checking...

Edit: A fews days later Mr. Schrodinger said "After a slight issue with gearbox oil ( )"
but didn't say how the issue was resolved!

A plea: Can folks please "close the loop" when faults are reported, solutions suggested and what was the subsequent cure.

I believe it's the scroll that is cut into the drive gear shaft that is supposed to prevent oil going up the cable...

Thanks for your replies..

I think the O ring might be missing. Must check. Ill also check the groves on the shaft.

I dont suppose there is any logic in pulling the actual angle drive apart to check the interior seals (if any)?

Hi Vassilis,

If the 'o' ring is missing or damaged you get oil leaking out from around the bearing carrier. There should also be a paper gasket between the bearing carrier and the angle drive. This was unavailable when I did mine so I used RTV. I think there should be a gasket under the knurled collar too. All these things are supposed to stop oil leaking out but I don't think they will stop oil going up the cable.

Regards

Hi Robbie,
yes, thats what I would think too.
So then only the scroll does the job of keeping the oil off the cable..?
Thing is, I wouldnt want my newly refubrished dial to be full of oil again!
Ill see what I find and report back..

Apart from the specific case with an Elan (as I already cited here: elan-f15/speedo-full-oil-t13777.html)

A blocked vent is a common cause of speedo head damage :( Is it clear of crud?

Worthwhile to eliminate it. The vent gets a mention here under "Oil Leaks" :

Note: Location is also important : "Ensure that the rear cover is correctly fitted (i.e. vent hole to the rear)"
