S3/SE diff cooling duct

PostPost by: ardee_selby » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:42 am

These ducts have been talked about quite a bit in the past, but I've still not got one

Current owner of car on ebay (Item No. 180619273028) refers to it's history of "repeated differential failure with high-speed cruising" (Interestingly with the CR box & 3.55 diff)

Anyone had a diff fail from lack of ducted air/overheating? Do current, alternative oils mitigate against it?

(BTW Roger Sieling said (to me) "Yes, I know they exist, I have one on my 45/26R. However, I have never seen another one on a street Elan. But, most Elan owners don't greet each other like dogs, looking under the left rear of the car to see if one is fitted") :)

Cheers - rd

I've got one in very good condition on my S3 SE coupe, and have considered making a mold from it and making reproductions, but don't know how many people would even want one...

Can someone post a pic so I can repair mine? Mine is missing portions and I want to restore it. A pic on one undamaged would great!

Many thanks,

Famous Frank

I'd like one! My standard S3 DHC (Sep '66) had one, I think it had a 3.9 diff. My current one owner S2 doesn't have a trace of one.

I am checking with the business where mine was made. I will find out if anymore are in line to be made, cost, etc. He recently retired so I dont want to throw out his contact info.

Once I get the perfect dimensions, I'll be making more myself, for my own cars and to replace the scoops I'll accidently destroy over curbs. It's a prefect compliment to the other S1 / S2 items I manufacture.

so this is just a less visible (but more likely to get broken off) version of the side scoop/ducting?

I wonder if they would work on my +2. My guess would be yes with a little work. Any thoughts? If anyone needs a diff cooler it is me hauling around all that extra +2 weight :)

But surely the unanswered question is; has anyone suffered from an overheating diff. on a road car?

Or, indeed, on a track car?

I've never suffered an overheating diff. But when you have a leak, or some seepage, I wonder how many people really check their diff fluid level? Not many I suspect. And that will eat up a diff in no time. Thinking of diff fluid, is recommended to use any additive when a LSD is installed?

Personally, I think the diff scoop other than being standard equipment on the S2 SE's, just has a wonderful "Cool" factor! Or at least until I tear it off.

Frank - I had to laugh at the "cool"factor but I tend to agree, I had planned on teh external scoop but unsure where to duct it??? The sub floor ones sound cool but way to many speed bumps near me and I fear will not last long :( :(
