Clutch

I hope to have my engine and box out at xmas,i know its a while away but better to get the stuff now I think.Ill be taking out a 4 speed box and replacing it with a 5 speed box.My question is,do i have to replace the flywheel and clutch or just the clutch.? And also has anyone put in an uprated clutch that is still useable on the road but can be used on track days too?

I use a standard clutch plate design but solid bonded linings in my competition engines. This style plate dispenses with the spring element between the two clutch lining surfaces but retains the standard lining and the torque springs Removing the spring element between the 2 linings reduces the gentle engagement a little that is produced by the small amount of flexibility it gives the cltuch linings. This arrangement handles 170 plus hp and 8000rpm on the track for many years without problem while still being sufficiently forgiving to drive easily on the road and track.

Full competition clutches only advantage is that they have lower rotational mass but they are a real pain to drive and get off the line at the start of a race.

Paul,

What 5 speed box do you intend to fit?
Which ever box it is you will need to fit an 8.5" clutch plate with the correct spline plus a 5 speed pressure plate. A guy on eBay sells new B&B pressure plates at reasonable cost.
Depending upon condition, it may only be necessary to get the face of the flywheel reground.

...or,if you have access to a lathe,you can use the 4-speed cover, bearing,bearing carrier and operating arm......

Ah,good point.I have a lotus 5speed that was rebuild.As for the lathe,sorry not in my garage.Am I to assume that a 5 speed flywheel is not needed,just reface what I have and put on a 5 speed clutch assy and bearing.?What about master/slaves cylinder?

...friction plate(spline),pressure plate(bearing contact face),bearing, carrier and arm...all 5-speed,slave and master cylinders the same...

P.S. you know about the mod to the friction plate centre?

...it's on the end of the operating arm (fork) and carries the release bearing..

...found it,but I still don't entirely agree with it as the input driveshaft splines are raised from the shaft,maybe they mean the sleeve along which the release bearing moves??....but then again that wouldn't be the flywheel side??
