I was recently reading an old Motor article and the author stated that all S4 Elans had a bonnet bulge, even the Weber models. Does anyone own an S4 with an ORIGINAL flat bonnet?

No the early S4s had flat bonnets, a friend of mine owned a couple back when they were new. If Lotus had flat bonnets left over from the S3 then they'd use them up first which is why you'll find a few hangover S3 parts on early S4s. The bulge is generally associated from the introduction of the stromberg carbs onwards(additional clearance reqd) and it's then you'll end up with either webber or strombergs under a bulge.

Yes then they went back to webers on the later S4's and obviously had bulgy bonnets to use up .........typical Lotus really :)

........... and after they had used up the surplus ones with bulges they reverted to flat!

Pete. '72 Sprint, Dellortos, no bulge (!).

..............and then you get the early cars which have had a replacement bonnet (like a local S3 FHC I know of) and have a bulgy either because of the owners preference or they got one of the batch at Hethel around 1969/70 ish

I make it a general rule not to believe anything I read in magazines :)
