Making a nose grille

PostPost by: jono » Mon Dec 05, 2022 1:21 pm

..I need a new grille for my Plus 2 restoration.

I know you can get them but I can't see how making one would be that difficult - has anyone done this?

I need 1.0mm wire 6mm x 12mm stainless weldmesh and some 3mm stainless wire for the frame but can't seem to find a source for small quants and it seems that 6mm square mesh is all that's available now (which would probably be okay)

Interested in the experience of others who've attempted this?

Cheers

Jon

My mesh was a little " tired " ,so purchased some stainless mesh and re-wrapped it over the existing frame....too many years ago now to recall the details , but like you say , it wasn't that difficult..

Having refitted my grill yesterday, it was ~6mm square mesh on my car not 6 x 12mm. Can't be sure its original but its in a condition that would be inline with it being original.

I use these people for mesh etc. https://themeshcompany.com they sell small or large quantities and have a very good range of products.

I got a small sheet of Stainless steel with punched holes in (I think) From RS Components, here in the UK.
some Stainless wire 8mm diameter, was bent around some pegs in a wooden block, following the profile of the original grille.
I did this about 10 or 12 years ago.
If you can weld stainless, it's pretty easy to make.

I did it with fine galvanised mesh. Result was indistinguishable from original (except the mesh is square, whereas the original was rectangular pattern).
