Remove wing mirror

PostPost by: Bienfu » Sun Apr 03, 2022 10:03 am

Hi everyone,

A wing mirror in mounted on my Elan, and I don't want to do anything stupid by dismantling it
I'd like to change because I can't see anything when I drive.
Here are pics of my wing mirror.
Could it be disassembled by the small metal plate in the photo?

Many thanks

I've heard that wing mirrors were not standard factory items, but were fitted by dealers, so I expect there are many kinds around.

You may have to just try your change & hope for the best.

The metal plate holds a seal, not the mirror. There are probably 1 or 2 bolts under the mirror base that go through the wing/fender.

Correct ^^, you can get to the mirror base from underneath the wing.

Thank you very much for your advice.
I didn’t think to look under the dashboard !
I looked quickly, and it’s going to be sporty with all these electrical wires and the ventilation duct.
Today I didn’t see the bolts but it will be easier with the doors wide open and a small camera. Not simple in the garage. I will try this week-end

Good news. I removed the mirror and I was able to adjust it better and now it's ok. The adjustment was blocked and I was able to correct that with some WD40. :D
I also saw that there were 3 holes where the mirror was.
So either I leave the mirror as it is or I add another passenger side mirror.
The problem is that where it is placed, putting one on the passenger side will not allow me to see the mirror. So it would be necessary to fill the holes, paint and then put mirrors on the doors or do nothing and let only one mirror on the driver side.
I have to think about it :)
