Is my rear parcel shelf normal?

Hi

I have never noticed this with Plus 2's before but my rear parcel shelf does not seem normal. Mine is fiberglass and integrated with the body. In that all the pictures I have seen on the internet it's a removable trimmed panel.

Zetec+ 2 under const, also 130S. And another 130S for complete restoration. Previously Racing green +2s with green tints. Yellow +2 and a couple of others, all missed. Great to be back 04/11/2021 although its all starting to get a bit out of control.

Hi Berni,

It may be of interest, that in order to make my 1970 Plus 2S meet FIA /Motorsport Ireland regulations for competition I had to fit an aluminium firewall between the passenger cabin and the fuel tank, using pop-rivets and fibreglass.

I refitted the original parcel shelf trim back over the aluminium sheeting. (Less the radio speakers ! )

Does your fibreglass arrangement seal off the fuel tank ?

Yes suspect that is the reason. Around this time the Ford Pinto with it's exploding fuel tank was causing issues. No doubt the FMVSS regulators at the time saw fit to introduce regulations to isolate the boot area and fuel tank from the passenger compartment.

Hi Guys

It looks like we have the winner! Yes the car used to be raced. Thank you very much. This answer helps me out in a couple of different ways. I was using the holes in the shelf as a data point for some measurements, and clearly they are not going to be accurate as the shelf is not part of the body structure as such.

Hi,
I have been following your very brave saga with interest.....

There is no fibreglass structure in the centre at the rear of a +2. The rear parcel shelf above the tank in my +2 is just vynil covered hardboard!
The pics below may help you visualise how the body structure is on a standard car:-
See here my pics during changing the fuel tank which may help. The first pic is after removing the fuel tank and afterwards with having done the fuel tank pipe mod . You can see the the turret structures of the body are just at the sides with a bolted centre brace between the two turrets. So any measurement you may be proposing to do i would suggest be from the turret tops at the sides or underneath the tank on the floor of the body.
