Re-Chroming Elan S4 window frames

PostPost by: RAJ2628 » Sat Jul 10, 2021 12:46 am

I am planning to re-chrome both window frames on my Elan S4. The company I expected to use has recently ceased trading.
Have any of the group undertaken this task recently. I am looking for recommendations from satisfied customers.
I am based in North West England but I will go anywhere in the UK.
Interested in timescale and some idea of costs.

http://derbyplating.co.uk/

I haven't used them, but they came recommended. They assure me that they have experience with Elan frames. They say they will polish the frames without barreling the edges. I was quoted £340+PP+VAT. The lead time is 8-10 weeks. I exchanged emails with a chap called James.

If the Derby Plating offer is for both frames, that's a good price. I had mine done by Doug Taylor in Somerset and they were £300 each incl VAT. Service was good and end result excellent

I used Derby for all of the chrome on my last Plus 2 restoration. Their work is superb and costs no more than many of the firms offering an inferior service.

That they are approved by the Rolls Royce club of GB is a good endorsement

If you watch the Retro Power series, they send all their chroming to Derby

I very recently had my S3 frames rechromed by Silchrome Plating in Leeds. I think they charged me around £180 + vat and did a very good job.

Could you post photos please? The polishing prior to plating is critical. Sounds like a bargain :-)

Two pictures below. They obviously are not fitted yet, but the chrome looks perfect. Judging by the size of the operation, and the number of large creates of parts in the yard, they are quite a large industrial busines who specialise in lots of different metal coatings. They have a web site.

Note that the camera flash has made the chrome look a bit naff, particularly on the left on second picture. However, the finish is perfect.

Thanks for posting the photos. They look really good and are a bargain at the price.

Would you mind taking a photo of the profile of the U channel at the top of the frame and the chrome strips that run along the door tops?

If the frames are over polished the U channel loses it's edge and becomes more rounded.

Many thanks.
