"original" +2 jack?

IMG_1212.JPG and
gap in weld
I am planning to jack up the +2 using what is supposed to be an original +2 jack. I purchased the jack as the car I purchased to restore did not have one. I do not understand selling a car with no radio and without a jack. There must be old jacks and radios in many garages.

The jack is dated 5/71. It appears to be correct but where the pin is attached to the jack pad looks rather dodgy. Please examine the attached photos. The pin collar has a portion that is not welded to the pad. Possibly a poor modification of another jack? Poor repair?

I am concerned that it might break away from the jack.

As soon as I am set free from my COVID shackles, I will take it to a fabricating sop to have it reinforced.

Thanks

Bob

That does not look like a weld from the original manufacturer Metallifacture, as you say maybe a repurposed similar jack.

I would be inclined to get the weld cleaned up & re-inforced before using it.

Brian
Your weld appears similar. It also has an opening where the pin is welded to the jack.

Looking at the photo, the top part of the jack which has a 7/16 pin inserted into a tube on the innes cill appears to be at an angle and not vertical. If it is at an angle then the cill support is possibly rotted inside the cill and if so will not be suitable for jacking.Without the jack in place insert a pencil into the cill jacking point and it should be in a vertical position., if not then remove the end cover plates in the wheelarch to inspect the metal inner cill/ They do rot rather well !

As part of the restoration I installed Spyder replacement galvanized sill stiffeners. They are like new as the car stays in a heated garage and is only driven in nice weather.

I have no reason why the pin would not fully seat. The photo shows the jack not yet in position.

Don't

Used my factory jack first year or so I owned the car 1984-5

End of the jack* failed and dropped the car with no wheel onto the driveway.

*thrust end of frame where the screw attaches
