S3 dhc rear view mirror.

PostPost by: davidj » Sat Sep 05, 2020 10:20 am

Good morning,

I guess the rear view mirror for my 66 dhc s3 attached to the windscreen support bar? Before I rush out and buy one, was it the same as fitted to the mgb of the period, and was it chrome? Many of the mgb mirrors have gold backs.

In my box of parts for the S3 I have a Wingard 909769 mirror with quite a heavy metal base. From reading this forum, it would appear this mirror was fitted to the later S4 and Sprint? Is this correct?

As always, thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers.

Sorry can't help 're MG fitment but this is what is on my 68 SE DHC
Hopefully might help you tracking something suitable.
Looks to be a yellow or goldfish colour but the pictures don't show that very well possibly due to the garage lighting. Can try and get a pic not through the screen if that would help?
Ignore the slightly off set glass..needs new backing adhesive.. as it has slipped a bit.
Just need to carefully remove the glass first...

Hi David,
I have the chrome MGB mirror clamped onto the windscreen tie rod. I have heard it should be the gold coloured version, but that sounds odd to me as everything else is chrome.
It did not fit snugly on my later rod from Sue Miller and had to be filed out to fit.
It works well and looks the part.

That looks similar to the Winguard on my Sprint:

Do you have the piece that glues to the windshield glass?

MGB is a good substitute; original is clamped to windscreen rod has a black crackle finish to the back but mirror size is exactly the same.
Spayed the back with VHT Wrinkle paint, the gold finish takes new paint no trouble.

Thanks again for all your replies. I have ordered an MGB one. The wingard mirror I have has a metal serrated disc in the base, held in place by a single screw at the front. Looks similar to the one in the picture.

Do you have the piece that glues to the windshild? It's useless without it.

My '68 S3 DHC has a chromed Lucas dipping mirror, attached via the windscreen rod. Has been on there from day 1 as far as I know. Understand it's a rarity.
It was definitely on there when I first owned the car 18 years ago.

This is the base of the mirror. I assume the metal disc is glued to the windscreen?

Try using a hair dryer to soften the adhesive, and a single edge razor blade. Work around the perimeter of the button, and apply force very gently. Do not use an open flame or a heat gun - even on the low setting.

You can also try a solvent like trichorethylene, but since the adhesive is typically a two part epoxy, the solvent may not help very much.

The usual disclaimers apply. It’s very easy to remove the thin, inner layer layer of the laminated windshield - no matter how careful you are.
