S2 Elan Door Seal

PostPost by: Mazzini » Wed Jan 22, 2020 10:45 am

A few years ago I bought some D section door seal from PMS, it matched the original seal profile perfectly. Recently I reordered the same seal from PMS and was sent a smaller foam rubber alternative.

I believe the original seal was used on the rear doors of a Morris Traveller, but I don't know for certain.

If anybody can point me in the direction of a supplier I'd be very grateful.

Hi mazzini,
I think your right as a while ago i too bought a seal for PM and it was basically the double sponge thingy that excludes drafts that you split in two !

I found this :

Looks good.

Hello Gino,

Thanks for your reply. Are you sure that's the right material? It looks like foam to me (but then my eyesight isn't what it was).

Cheers,

Rob

HI Rob,
I used this seal from Woolies (UK). It is a sponge material but has a rubber skin.

It's about the correct size compared to the original that was on my car.

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the link, it's much appreciated.

I believe you and Richard W were going to come over and pay me a visit, you're more than welcome, but perhaps in the spring might be a better time.

Cheers,

Rob

I used the seal from Woolies on the doors of my S2 and it is smaller in section that I think it should be. Just 1/2" along the straight sides. As I result I do get a draught into the car when moving at speed. A friends S2 has a completely different section seal, more like a 3 clawed hen's foot if you can imagine it. I think it's the same as that shown in SJs on line catalogue if I remember correctly. Will check in a mo.

Just checked and it is the same. Listed for S1 and S2, different for S3 on

Hello Geoffers,

Good to hear from you. I hope all is well.

Thanks for the S&J link.

I'm sorry to say that I haven't laid a spanner on the Elite since last year, but I hope one day we can reunite the shed mates.

Take care and all the best,

Rob

I didn't recognise you from your user name but I've realised who I'm messaging now. Yes, Richard has mentioned visiting and I'm looking forward to that. As you say spring time would be better. Hope to meet you then.

Hi Gino,
Glad you like the videos. I was lucky and was able to use the original rubber matting that was in my car. I believe it can be purchased in USA. If you search the forums for 'alligator hide' or 'alligator skin' or 'elephant hide' you'll find threads where it will tell you where is can be purchased. I've seen Jay at jaeparts.com mentioned, but I've no experience of buying from them.

Doesn’t Famous Frank on this forum make the early floor and cabin trim?

I think Famous Frank makes seat covers, door coverings and centre consoles.

It's JAE that makes the rubber matting (aka toad skin or elephant hide). It's mostly pre-cut and very well made. It's not quite a match to the original material, but I suspect it'll be much harder wearing.

The matting set is good value for money, but the UK tax authorities had their pound of flesh, not sure if there is a way round that.

Hi paul and Rob,

I've seen this matting and have come across some pricing too like $600 for the set
When buying from the states there's then the dreaded import duties and the transport costs .. this will run up to nearly $900 for sure.
I'm not that far up with my resto yet so i'll postpone the purchase until a later date.
I've asked the usual suspects but nothing ... surely this material must have been originally sourced from from England ?
Anything similar in UK you guys know of that I could consider ?

Thanks

Hi Gino,

I gather the material was originally used on the base model Ford Cortina and Anglia. I've not come across an alternative in the UK - sorry.

Best,

Rob

Hi Rob, Sorry I missed your message first time round. I'm fine, just suffering the symptoms that come with galloping old age  I was intrigued by the SJ profile for the door seal on an S2, because I certainly don't remember it being like that on my first S2 in the 60s and it wasn't like that on my current S2. But my mates '66 S2 has the very same profile. Did it change for the later S2s I wonder?
Oh and get on with that Elite,at this rate you'll be too old to drive it when (if) it's finished
