Relpacement hard top window for S2

PostPost by: benymazz » Mon Dec 30, 2019 1:58 am

All,

In the process of restoring the hard top for my S2 and it appears that I'm going to need to replace the rear window as the current one is cloudy and scratched from many good years of service and then many more years in storage. Does anyone know of a source for a replacement, preferably in the United States?

Check with a local airport small plane maintenance and repair facility. They have sources to replicate plexiglass windscreens. There is one on the West Coast, but I would think you could find one in your part of the country.

I believe this is the company that Prezoom refers to:

http://www.aircraftwindshield.com/automotive.html

They do excellent work and have an enormous library of molds, particularly vintage cars.

An alternative would be to fabricate one of your own. It would involve making a plaster cast of your existing backlight. Then use a piece of new flat plexiglass laid over your mold, gently warm it in an oven so it slumps over your mold, then trim to finish.

Dan

Ben,

There is a company in St Augustine that can probably use your old one as a pattern and make you a new one of Plexiglass (acrylic). I just talked to a fellow there on Sat. They made a windscreen and headlamp covers fo my special Sprite (1960 Sebring class winner and '60 LeMans 16th overall, class winner etc). We can contact them once you're back in Fl.

I bought mine from Dave Bean Engineering a few years ago. Check with them as they may still have stock.

Finding a oven big enough could be a challenge. I have seen it done by placing the form and the plexiglass in a box painted black and left out in the sun. Of course it was done here in the reclaimed desert they call Southern California.

Such a long time ago but I'm pretty sure a had my perspex screen cut as flat from the original. The curvature is not great and it must have gone in without too much trouble. Sadly I have no idea of the source or cost as I don't have a complete bill archive.

I agree, although not an original factory hardtop my screen was cut from a flat piece and I fitted it without problems.
