This is the convention and method I?ve seen the most, this is a S3 DHC, pic from this forum somewhere.
6395 would be an early S3 car so chances are the marking method is a continuation from 26 series.

I note the picture is tagged 'LHD in Canada', so again the question remains if the 'CH NO XX/XXX' in the gap is for exported cars??
It is actually how I have written it, but not quite as neatly.

Graeme, the filling in of Ch No was only carried out for export markets, where it was required. I have never seen a UK delivered car filled in below the panel.

I have attached an article I wrote in 2018 for the Club Lotus News mag on VIN systems, which may be helpful.

I recall reading your excellent article when it came out.
I have no reason to doubt 'Craven's' testimony that the pictures in the above post are of UK cars. In which case it may be the case that it depended on whom was on the production line!

As one of those plates is of my own car, these details are recorded on the original ? Log ? book of 1967. So you can be absolutely assured this is how at least one was done in this way.
