My +2 is in the 700?s build numbers and didn?t have a rear view mirror when I acquired it.

The head lining looks original and there is no sign that the RVM was ever attached to the roof as is common to a lot of later +2?s. I have always assumed it should have the suction type mirrors that were common in the sixties.

Can anyone tell me if I am correct and also tell me the make of such a mirror that would have been used then.

On my S3 coupe, the rear view mirror is glued to the inside of the windscreen, not a suction device. It is some sort of powerful glue that sticks to glass.

I've been looking into this as well.

I've got an early plus 2 as well, but mine had a mirror that didn't look quite correct (and is sun damaged and the mirror backing is looking a bit crappy).

I've found this recently on eBay, but the price is far too rich for me.

Interestingly my windscreen has evidence of an adhesive mirror being fitted at some point. I beleive the windscreen is original or at least period correct.

I hadn?t considered a stick on type, any chance of a picture Bill as the one mentioned on eBay looks like a screw on type.

The rear view mirror on the early Plus 2 is the same as the S3 Elan Coupe, being a Ford item from a Zephyr Mk3 of the period. They were screwed on to the roof through the headlining.

But how is it fixed to the car?

My headlining shows no evidence to have having anything attached to it.

I have a Wingard mirror which is shown below that might or might not interest you. This was sold to me by someone on the Forum who claimed it is a S2 mirror which I don't think it is!

The mirror is 143mm x 54mm. It is on a stalk which would place the centre of the mirror 105mm down from the mounting (2 elongated screw holes which are 30 min and 52mm apart.

I have now opted for a Lucas 608 which I bought on Ebay so I am happy to part with this one for a very modest sum (say 20 ?) to cover the postage in a box to you (or anyone who would like to buy it for that matter).

Please note that it has been "restored" and that it will need some TLC as it wobbles on the stalk!

Hmmm, having seen the photo showing a mirror screwed through the headlining I realise I was wrong above, I must have been thinking of one of the other cars that I've owned over the years or about the CB aerial which I had which definitely had two parts glued to the windscreen inside and out so that the glass acted as a capacitor coupling.

The one in my S3 Coupe is like the photos shown, screwed to a boss in the roof under the headlining.

Would you give be 24 hours to check out my car to do a bit of touchy-feely to see if I am wrong and there is something to mount on behind the head lining.

I would think there's a good chance your car has had a new headlining at some time in the past 50 years or so Peter!

I have seen on two 1968 S4 coupes (one Fed and one UK) which I believe quite original, at least for that aspect (both had their original "confetti" headliners, a fabric that is only now reproduced, but not quite exactly as the original), that they are screwed on a smal piece of wood glued (glassed?) on the ceiling, like for sunvisors.

Yep, I am beginning to realise that my original thinking was wrong and that the RVM should attach to the roof.
