Air vent colour

The centre knurled part of the 'eye ball' vents on my +2 are a yucky, dirty lemon colour. In fact every picture I look at they always seem to be the same. They look like they should have been chromed or something originally and it's either fallen off or been bleached over time.
Does anyone know what they were originally and has anyone tried to paint them or something. I find they spoil the look of the dashboard.

Yes, they should be chromed. But it's worn away as is the norm with 50 year old kit.
My car is the same but I have not tried painting them as I don't think they look too bad as they are.
