Lotus Elan SE4 door seals

Hi everyone,
I have bought a pair of door seals for my Elan SE4 from Paul Mattey last year, having fitted them I no longer have the originals as they had perished completely. The new ones however will not allow me to shut the door without slamming it which is not advisable with a fibreglass car. I don't want to adjust the doors further out as they will look totally wrong and will look out of character with the lines of the body. Has anybody else had the same experience and had to purchase seals from elsewhere or know the correct profile.
Regards
Keith

I've put these on mine and they fit well

The fact that the doors still shut, albeit with a slam, suggests that the seals are almost right. Perhaps give them few weeks/months to settle into their compressed shape? Mine eased up considerably during the Winter shutdown after being fitted.

There are a lot of posts on the subject of the door seals/fitment, type " door seals" into the search box, grab a cup of coffee and have a read for a couple of hours

Have they supplied the proper lipped seal?

Hi,
Saw this the other day which looks similar to the original.

I have the original seal somewhere but haven't taken any measurements yet.

I thought the correct double flap seal was no longer manufactured. Do you have a photo of the Sue Miller offering ?

Sue sent me a piece so I could set the doors properly - I will hopefully be over my dads tomorrow and have a look, tho I don't think it is double like the one in your photo. :(

Regards,

Mark.

Like I thought - not exactly the same as the original. But I think this is as close as you can get.

I know it's a long shot, but perhaps we should try and find a company willing to re manufacture the original profile.

Might be different now but I tried that a few years ago without success. Baines quoted me ?4,000 -?5,000 tooling costs and a minimum order quantity of 50,000 mtrs ...I concluded they didn't really want the job.

I found that using a small sample length to adjust the door fit and closing does not guarantee it will still fit and close properly once the complete seal is fitted. I also found that the single flap foam seal shown above was too thick and did not compress enough. May work on some cars but didn't on mine unfortunately.

The search continues.....

Fortunately my doors have a pretty good fit to the body on the outside, so I hope they are the same when I come to fit the seal.
It's a few months away at the moment - but I will update this post when it's done. :D
