Smiths F465 Heater Disassembly

PostPost by: djb222 » Wed Jan 23, 2019 10:18 pm

I've just taken apart the Smiths heater, that I removed from the car last week, to give it a clean and to see what needs doing... These things are pretty much unobtainable now....I can find a few spares online but no information or drawings...if anyone has any links etc I'd love to know..
Smiths hearers were used in a wide variety of British cars in the 60's but pretty much all of a different design.

Great stuff David.

I'm finding your videos really helpful as I started my restoration at around the same time as you (a 72 Sprint in very similar condition to yours) and have been doing all the same things!

I'm glad to hear they are useful.

They are great cars to work on although some jobs can be awkward. I'll be removing the seats and carpets this afternoon.

Would love to see some pics of your car.

It's been laid up for a little while.
Since 1981!

Looks like a great project. The body loos in good condition. Mine looks good from 10 yards and the paint isn't the best.

Good look with the project....if you want to chat Elan you can PM me.

Well done! Really helpful. Do you think it would be prudent to disassemble the fan motor just in case it needs a timely refurb whilst out of the car? Of course this suggestion has nothing to do with the fact that mine has stopped working and it would be nice to see someone else find out how to do it before I mess mine up  :)

There's not much to the Motor, relatively easy to rebuild the motor. Mine looked like this when split open:

Water & rust everywhere...

The biggest advice I can give is to really clean the output shaft, so when you pull the upper casing off, it doesn't pull the sintered bearing out of the end housing.

New carbon brushes are available - 1/4 x 1/4".

My motor is now rebuilt & runs smoothly.

Mine is cleaner than that......and yes the bearing did pull out....bugger!!

And so...... today I decided to remove the fan motor and take it apart, as it was dusty and dirty inside.....good idea? Well i didn't think so halfway through. You know how you think you know how something should come apart........

Thank you David, your personal sacrifice is much appreciated by me. Trouble is I now have to dig up the enthusiasm to remove dash and get started. :(
