Plus 2 converting windscreen to bonded in type

My car has a rubber held screen. The car is due to go into body shop in next few weeks for final prep and spraying following amongst other work, extensive body repairs by myself. Having just pulled the screen, I was wondering about extending the fiberglass lip (purple on photo) to allow the screen to be bonded in.

Two questions, has anyone done this and fairly importantly is the profile (roof to lip profile) of the bonded screen the same as a rubber held screen, so would the bonded screen trim fit?

Hi,

Are you mad??? Who would want a bonded in screen..difficult to fit and remove.. leaks and of course the original trim is no longer available. Stay with the rubber surround. I've had several Plus 2s and the rubber seal is far better in my opinion. I have a bonded screen and wished it was rubber.

I will second George's opinion here. My +2S has the bonded screen and I would love to convert it to the rubber moulding configuration. In addition to the problems with installing the bonded screen I never liked the mismatch between the front and rear screen fixing methods.

I am trying to decide whether or not to convert from bonded to rubber seal.

+1 stay with rubber the bonded are a pain in the butt :shock:

The only reason I wondered about going from rubber to bonded, was that I thought from a structural point of view it would add some stiffness. Having removed the headlining I was pretty unimpressed by what might be protecting me in the event of an accident, any additional stiffness seemed like a bonus to me and properly bonded must be an improvement over rubber fixing. However, having seen the above comments I will stick with what I have.

I'm with Russ. Would love get rid of the wrinkled trim that surrounds my front windscreen. The idea of matching the rear screen is appealing.

Is it possible to convert a bonded screen to the earlier rubber seal? It would be something I?d like to do to my ?70 S2 Europa. I understand that the body moulds were changed to achieve the bonded screen but I?ve never seen the difference in the flesh so I don?t know if it?s at all possible. I believe the windscreen/shield never changed.

There is no lip across the lower part of the screen area on the bonded body but I think a few guys have added this to convert away from bonded.

I am lucky to have not only an Elan Sprint but also a 1976 TVR 3000M.
For the TVR "M" series Windscreen we use an Asymmetric rubber Seal which has a wider Lip to follow the Body profile. Maybe this can be used for non Bonded Screens on Elans. :wink:
