Bonnet catch plates......

Hi all.
Just a quick question, should the Bonnet catch plates on a 2 seater be painted or just bare alloy?
When i repainted my car i painted them and frankly after a number of bonnet opens and closes they are starting to look a bit battered.... i'm tempted to clean the paint off them and leave them open but i'm just a little curious to know how they were originally done?
